Alas, A Star Is Born

I don't care much for Sarah Palin, and I care even less for her politics. But I have to hand it to her. She gave a helluva speech last night. Sure, one could question or disagree with much of what she said. Sure, she almost certainly wrote few if any of the words she spoke. Sure, she probably received all kinds of prepping from speechmeisters. Nevertheless, she stepped up on that podium under pressure most of us can't even begin to comprehend and that would have reduced me to a quivering mass of human jello and she delivered a masterful, star-making performance. And although Joe Biden has probably forgotten more about foreign and domestic policy than Sarah Palin will ever know, I have no doubt that she has the talent to be expertly coached into appearing to the superficial public eye as though she knows this stuff even better than Biden does when she debates him in October, and she'll earn kudos for being as aggressive as possible while Biden will be chastised for picking on a woman if he doesn't exercise straightjacketed restraint.

I already believed that McCain would win the election. Now I feel certain of it. There are just too many people in this country who love the political pablum Palin served them on a glittering platter last night, and now they'll believe that she has the testicular fortitude to help John McCain transform America into a Reaganite's wet dream or to do it by herself should she need to take over as president.

Well Nag,

I watched McCain last night and whatever votes Palin gained he threw away and probably many more.

He was frankly AWFUL. From staring at his teleprompter all night to acting like he was popping tranquilizers back at his hotel he sounded like he was under the influence of something or someone or simply just was showing his age.

Let's be honest, his time was 8 years ago and now it's gone.

He did nothing but repeat over and over he was some sort of war hero bombing poor civilians from 40,000 feet. Sad

I agree that McCain's speech was underwhelming. I agree that he looks old and bordering, sometimes, on senile. His 96-year-old mother looks more on-the-ball than he does. And that's not surprising given what he's gone through in his life. His ordeal in Vietnam probably erased years if not decades from his lifespan and could well have undermined his mental as well as physical health. And then there's his having had melanoma, one of the deadliest cancers around and which can reappear almost instantly in a terminal stage. All of this makes his VP choice very important, and I definitely don't like what I see in her.

I sure hope you're right and I'm wrong about who's likely to win the election.

Nagarjuna,

It's unfortunate that McCain had a tough life but just think about this... if someone had an aircraft and bombed innocent civilians in Washington DC what do you think the US Military would have done to him/her is caught? Wouldn't they have tortured him/her just like what the Cong did to McCain?

I like the people of the USA but damn it it just wasn't right for them to bomb civilians in Vietnam.

You raise a very provocative question. If McCain suffered what he did as a result of being shot down doing something he shouldn't have been doing, how much credit should he receive for it?

You got that right, Nagarjuna.

What kind of "Hero" firebombs innocent civilians?

Could the Congress try him for war crimes before he gets into office and spare ourselves four more years of Bushitler policies? (G)
